Kulob is an ancient city of the south. Its people count its years back some twenty-seven centuries, among the oldest towns of Central Asia, and it grew as a market of the southern plains. A saint made it holy.
The great Sufi Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, a poet and teacher who carried Islam to Kashmir, was laid to rest at Kulob. Cotton clothed the valley. On the watered plains around Kulob the people grew cotton and fruit in the fertile lowland, and the town lived by its farms and its bazaars.
A mountain of salt rose nearby. Out on the plain stood Khoja Mumin, a great dome of pure salt, one of the wonders of the land, and Kulob grew as the city of the southern valley, keeping its shrine, its cotton, and its old market. The plains still whiten with cotton.

The city sits in the valley of the Yakhsu river, on a fertile lowland of cotton and orchard, between the mountains and the great rivers of the south, with the Pamir ranges rising to the east and the plains falling away toward the Panj. The river waters the fields.
