Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
The main streets set the geography. Magtymguly, Pervomayskiy and Gurbansoltan eje şaýoly are the lines the grid hangs from, and a room on or near one of them puts most of Balkanabat within reach of a short walk between kvartal blocks. The blocks repeat.
That uniformity is the point of a kvartal layout, so choosing between quarters matters less here than choosing which of the three main streets a stay should sit on. The mountains are the other consideration. Balkanabat stands at the foot of the Balkan Daglary, so the range is the fixed reference for anyone orienting a stay, and the mountains are what most visitors come this way for.
Distances decide the rest. Türkmenbaşy and its seaport lie a long drive west, Ashgabat much further east, so Balkanabat works as a stop on that run as much as a destination, and a bed here is often a bed between two longer legs. Anyone with business at the province offices will want the centre; if you are here for the Balkan Daglary, take a room on the side of the grid nearest the slopes.

What is the history of Balkanabat?
The city dates from 1933. What the year fixed was a planned town, laid out as kvartal blocks in a grid that has stayed the plan of Balkanabat ever since. Two names came first.
Neftedag and Nebit-Dag both stood over the same streets before the present name did, and the sequence of them tracks the changes of administration the city passed through rather than any move on the ground. The province followed later. Balkanabat became the administrative centre of Balkan Province, the largest province in Turkmenistan, which handed a planned town of apartment quarters the business of running the country's largest administrative unit from a grid at the foot of a mountain range.
Street names record the layers. Pervomayskiy sits in the same list as Magtymguly and Gurbansoltan eje şaýoly, so the three main lines of the grid carry different periods of naming across a single town plan. The plan has not been redrawn.
Balkanabat is still read as the grid it was set out as, with the kvartal blocks between Magtymguly and Pervomayskiy standing where the founding plan put them.

The Balkan Daglary stands over the city. Balkanabat lies at the foot of the range, on ground that runs west towards the seaport at Türkmenbaşy, 160 km away, and east on the long road to Ashgabat. Height comes from one side only.
Balkan Province spreads around the city in every other direction, and the grid of Balkanabat sits inside it as the administrative centre of the largest province in Turkmenistan.
What is the climate of Balkanabat?
The range is the nearest influence. Balkanabat lies under the Balkan Daglary in the temperate belt north of the equator, which gives the city a year of two clear halves rather than one long even season. The city itself sits low.
Its ground is at the base of the range rather than inside it, so conditions in the kvartal grid run closer to those of the open country west towards Türkmenbaşy than to those of the slopes above.
How do you get to Balkanabat?
Balkanabat sits between two bigger places. Türkmenbaşy and its seaport lie about 160 km to the west, Ashgabat roughly 450 km to the east, and the run between them is the axis most arrivals in Balkanabat come along. The grid begins at the range.
Once in the city, the three main streets carry the traffic, with Magtymguly, Pervomayskiy and Gurbansoltan eje şaýoly linking the kvartal blocks to the roads out at either end.
