What is the history of Anamur?
An ancient city stood on the cape here. The Greeks and Romans built the town of Anemurium on the headland by the sea, and its theatres, baths, and tombs still stand in ranks on the slope above the water. A great necropolis remains.
Row upon row of Roman tombs cover the hillside of the old city, one of the finest cities of the dead in the land. A mighty castle rose in the middle ages. On the shore east of the ruins the rulers of the coast built the great fortress of Mamure, walled and towered against the sea raiders, and it passed from Crusaders to Turkish lords through the centuries.
Bananas came in the end. In the warm shelter of the cape, growers planted the banana groves that made Anamur famous across Turkey, and the town kept its castle and its ruins by the sea. The waves still break on the walls.
