Xizhi, New Taipei City — Area Guide & Where to Stay
Where to stay in Xizhi
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Xizhi is a corridor before it is a destination. A room here is chosen for the position between Taipei City and Keelung City rather than for what stands on the doorstep, and Xizhi railway station puts both within an ordinary commute. Cihang Memorial marks the quieter option.
It stands a few hundred metres from Cihang Hall, and beds near that pair come closest to giving the district a neighbourhood rather than a route. The Tomb of Du Yuesheng lies within the same short reach. It suits you if being between two cities beats being inside one of them.
About Xizhi
What are the main landmarks in Xizhi?
Four names make the list in Xizhi. The Tomb of Du Yuesheng travels furthest beyond the district, and Cihang Memorial and Cihang Hall stand a few hundred metres apart, carrying one name through two buildings. The Xizhi Baiyun Police Station closes the set, a registered historic building on Xiding Road in the south of the district.
Sifang Hospital turns up on lists drawn around Xizhi, but it stands in Datong District over in Taipei City, well over ten kilometres west, and belongs to that city rather than to this district.
What is the history of Xizhi?
Xizhi District carries no founding date on record, and its past is read from its buildings instead. Cihang Hall holds the older claim. It served as the first site of the memorial to the monk Shi Cihang before the commemoration moved to Cihang Memorial in 1963, which is how one name came to sit on two buildings.
The Tomb of Du Yuesheng was laid out in 1953. Rail came earlier still, with Xizhi railway station opening in 1891, and the Xizhi Baiyun Police Station standing from the decades that followed.
Where is Xizhi?
Xizhi holds the eastern side of New Taipei City between Taipei City and Keelung City, more closely built up than the thinly settled districts east of it.
