Where to stay in Morogoro

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

In Morogoro the choice is between the market streets and the slopes that rise behind them. The centre keeps the markets, the university, and the gardens within a walk, and staying downtown suits anyone here for the town. The mountains rise to the south.

Farms spread beyond the streets. Out toward the hills and the parks, the town gives way to the mountain villages, the sisal farms, and the road to Mikumi. A room out of the centre trades the streets for the green slopes, the forest trails, and the wide plains toward the game country.

The plains run east for miles. Stay downtown for the town, or out for the mountains. The green mountains and the wide farms hold the mountain-foot town.

About Morogoro

Morogoro is the mountain-foot city of east-central Tanzania.

What is Morogoro known for?

Below the steep green Uluguru mountains in the heart of the country, it grew as a farm and market town, and it keeps the forested wall of the Ulugurus above the streets, the wide farms and sisal of the plain, the road to the great Mikumi park, and the busy railway to the coast and the south. The green mountains rise over the town. Farms spread across the plain.

What are the main landmarks in Morogoro?

The Uluguru mountains are the pride of Morogoro. The steep forested range rising sharp above the town, a green wall over the plain, is the emblem of the region, out of downtown. A great park lies down the road.

The Mikumi park spreads its savanna and game east of the town nearby, while the sisal farms, the mountain forests, and the old railway mark the country around Morogoro.

What is the history of Morogoro?

Morogoro grew below the mountains. The Luguru people farmed the steep green slopes of the Ulugurus, and a market town rose on the plain at their foot. The Germans built a railway.

In colonial days a railway was laid through Morogoro toward the great lakes, and the town grew as a station and a centre of the sisal trade. The plain fed the country. On the warm farmland around Morogoro grew sisal, sugar, and grain, and the town became a hub of Tanzanian farming.

The parks lay close by. Down the road stood Mikumi and the vast Selous beyond, full of elephants and lions, and Morogoro grew as the city below the Ulugurus, keeping its farms, its mountains, and its railway. The green slopes still rise.

Morogoro keeps its mountain-foot city on the plain.

Where is Morogoro?

Morogoro lies in the middle of Tanzania, at the foot of the Uluguru mountains. The city sits on a plain below the steep forested range, in a warm green country of farms and rivers, with the Ulugurus rising sharp to the south and the wide plains running toward the coast in the east. The green range walls the town.

Wide plains reach to the coast.

What is the climate of Morogoro?

Warm tropical air and heavy rain set the pattern of Morogoro's year. Warm weather holds all year below the hills, with heavy rains off the mountains and warm dry spells between. The rains soak the hills.

Bright days follow the storms.
