About Tanga Region

Coast and border together.

What is Tanga Region known for?

Tanga Region meets the Indian Ocean along its entire eastern side, while the northern edge runs up against Kenya and Kilimanjaro Region, giving the region one frontier on land and another on water. Tanga city, the regional capital and a municipality in its own right, stands on that shore. Inland the ground reaches west to Manyara Region and south to Morogoro Region and Pwani Region.

Its extent is comparable to Burundi.

Where is Tanga Region?

The ocean is the eastern edge. Tanga Region carries a coastline on the Indian Ocean, and that shore is the reference point from which the rest of the region is measured, because everything else about its position is described in relation to the water or to a neighbour. Four regions and one country ring the rest of it.

Kenya and Kilimanjaro Region close the northern side, Manyara Region takes the west, and Morogoro Region and Pwani Region carry the southern boundary. Size is easier by comparison. The region covers ground comparable to the combined land area of Burundi, and it is one of the thirty-one administrative regions into which Tanzania is divided.

Tanga city anchors it. The municipality holds the regional capital and stands on the coast, so the seat of administration and the seaward edge of the region are one and the same. South of the equator and within the tropics, Tanga Region takes its seasons from the belt it sits in rather than from any difference between its own northern and southern ends.

Nothing here is a short hop. A journey from the Kenya border down to the Pwani Region line crosses the whole region, and the coastal side and the inland side make for very different travelling.

What is Tanga Region like?

The coast shapes the region's outlook. An Indian Ocean shoreline runs the length of the eastern side, and Tanga city sits on it as both regional capital and municipality, which places the seat of administration directly on the water. Swahili is the language of daily exchange.

It carries the market, the office and the road alike, and it is shared with the rest of Tanzania, so the region is never set linguistically apart from the country around it. Borders matter here. Kenya lies immediately to the north, so the northern districts look toward a national frontier as well as toward Kilimanjaro Region, while the southern side faces Morogoro Region and Pwani Region instead.

Inland the reference changes again. Manyara Region takes the western boundary, and the further one moves from the ocean the more the region reads as interior country rather than coast. Tanga city remains the fixed point.

It is the address for regional business, the place a visitor is most likely to arrive at, and the name the whole region carries. Scale is part of the character: this is ground comparable in size to the land area of Burundi, which is a great deal of country to hold under one capital.

What is the history of Tanga Region?

Administration is what the record holds. Tanga Region is one of the thirty-one regions of Tanzania, and the national census of 2022 is the point at which the unit was set down in official terms. The capital has a municipal form.

Tanga city is a municipality as well as the regional seat, and the boundaries drawn against Kenya, Kilimanjaro Region, Manyara Region, Morogoro Region and Pwani Region define what that seat administers.

What is the climate of Tanga Region?

The Indian Ocean does the moderating. Air off the water reaches the eastern side of Tanga Region first, and the coast around Tanga city feels that influence a great deal more than the inland ground out toward Manyara Region. Being south of the equator and inside the tropics, the region runs on wet and dry spells instead of a cold season and a warm one.

Winter as such never arrives.

How do you get to Tanga Region?

Tanga city is the way in. The regional capital stands on the Indian Ocean coast and is the point most arrivals pass through, whether they come down from the Kenya border in the north or up from Pwani Region in the south. Inland routes run west.

Manyara Region and Kilimanjaro Region are reached overland from the interior, while Morogoro Region lies beyond the southern boundary of the region.
