Nova Zabudova is a lived-in residential quarter rather than a hotel strip. Its long spines, Antonovycha and Velyka Vasylkivs'ka, carry trams, shops and cafés and put much of central Kyiv within easy reach, which is exactly why travellers who want the neighbourhood on their doorstep tend to book along or just off these two streets. If you want a base here, look to rooms near Velyka Vasylkivs'ka and the Kyiv Fortress rather than deep in the side lanes.

What are the main landmarks in Nova Zabudova?
The dominant sight is the Kyiv Fortress, whose construction in the nineteenth century is the very reason this neighbourhood exists. Two churches punctuate the streets: the Church of the Ascension and the Holy Trinity church, both parish landmarks of the old quarter. The Maria Zankovetska Museum honours a great figure of Ukrainian theatre, and a Statue of Sholom Aleichem stands nearby in memory of the Yiddish writer.

What is the history of Nova Zabudova?
Nova Zabudova arose in the 1830s and 1840s as land set aside for people resettled from Pechersk, whose old homes were cleared to make way for the New Pechersk Fortress. The name marks that origin. What grew here was a planned district on the right bank of the Dnieper, filling the valley below the fortified plateau and spreading between the works and the Lybid river.
Over the following century it hardened into one of central Kyiv's characteristic nineteenth-century quarters. The fortress made the neighbourhood.
