The neighbourhood keeps its landmarks modest and local. Музей циркового мистецтва draws curious visitors with its record of Kyiv's circus tradition. Nearby stands the Церква Чесного Образу Божої Матері "Знамення" (Васильчики), a working parish church whose grounds anchor the older Vasylchyky pocket of Nyvky. Two memorials mark the district's memory: Пам'ятник Дем'янові Коротченку honours a Soviet statesman, and Пам'ятний знак Петру Нестерову recalls the pioneering aviator whose name the surrounding streets carry.
What is the history of Nyvky?
Nyvky grew from farmland on the western reaches of Kyiv. The name itself means small fields. Through the twentieth century the fields gave way to planned housing, and the district took its present shape when the Nyvky metro station opened in 1971 on the Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska Line.
The architect Boris Pryimak set the station's shallow platform beneath Prospect Beresteiskyi, binding the growing blocks to central Kyiv. Older estates around Vasylchyky remember the earlier village.
