The river tells Podil's story. Its port and shipyard on the Dnieper made this the working edge of Kyiv, and the old magistrate quarter that governed the medieval city still gives the Lower City its grid of merchant streets and squares. The Kyiv Hills rise sharply behind.

What is the history of Podil?
Podil is one of the oldest neighbourhoods of Kyiv. It grew on the floodplain terrace over the Dnieper as the birthplace of the city's trade, commerce and industry, and after the Mongol invasion of Rus' and the destruction of Kyiv it served as the city centre until the 19th century. Trade never left.
The city magistrate and the main university sat here, and later the port and shipyard were established along the water.
Where is Podil?
The Lower City lies flat. It spreads across a floodplain terrace over the Dnieper, held between the Kyiv Hills and the lower stream of the Pochaina River.
