Obolon, Kyiv — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Obolon is a right-bank district in northern Kyiv, a riverside quarter of Soviet-era towers strung along the Dnipro.

About Obolon

Where to stay in Obolon

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Base yourself along the Dnipro in Obolon. Beds gather along the Dnipro embankment, where the riverside promenade and the beaches of Obolon put the river at the door while the metro still runs straight down into central Kyiv. Quieter rooms sit inland toward Куренівка.

The blocks around Церква Святого Пантелеймона lean residential and calm.

About Obolon

What are the main landmarks in Obolon?

Obolon keeps its sights small and civic. The Церква Святого Пантелеймона anchors the older Куренівка ground with a working parish church, and nearby the Пам'ятник старшинам Армії УНР, уродженцям Києва marks the Kyiv-born officers of the Ukrainian People's Republic army. Two museums draw the curious.

The Firefighting museum lays out the city's fire brigades, while the Музей історії ІНМ ім. В. М. Бакуля traces the story of Ukraine's superhard-materials institute.

What is the history of Obolon?

Low meadows once flooded here. The name Obolon itself means marshy waterside ground, the reedy Dnipro flats that stayed farmland and pasture on the edge of Kyiv long after the old town filled up. Sand changed all of that.

Engineers pumped river sand to raise the marsh, and across the later Soviet decades the drained flats grew into one of the city's largest planned housing arrays, its towers marching north from Куренівка along the embankment.

Where is Obolon?

Obolon lies on the right bank of the Dnipro in northern Kyiv, a flat, sand-raised riverside plain of embankment beaches, inland ponds and tower blocks reaching toward Куренівка.
