What is the history of Podil Raion?
Podil grew as Kyiv's trading floor. For centuries the riverside quarter below the hills carried the wharves, workshops and merchant houses that fed the city, and the raion that now bears its name was drawn in 1921 to fold in the surrounding settlements. The map widened outward.
Kurenivka, Priorka and the ravine of Babi Yar were pulled into a single borough that stitched old Cossack suburbs to the port, and the twelfth-century Saint Cyril's Monastery on the Kyrylivska slope passed from a walled cloister into the growing city. War left the deepest mark. The killings at Babi Yar still define how the district is remembered.
