About Mountain View

Where to stay in Mountain View
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Rooms here sit close to the airbase gate and the downtown road, so travellers trade skyline hotels for quiet blocks a short drive from central Anchorage. Stay practical. Motels and rentals cluster near Mountain View Drive and the Northway Mall, where the shops, buses and eateries of the commercial strip gather within a few walkable blocks, while calmer beds wait on the residential streets that run back toward McCarrey Street and the Glenn Highway.
Elmendorf Air Force Base edges the north. Choose your street.
About Mountain View
What are the main landmarks in Mountain View?
Mountain View Drive is the landmark that defines the neighbourhood. The strip runs its full length, gathering the Northway Mall, family-run groceries and storefronts that trade in the foods of a dozen home countries. Commercial Drive and Bragaw Street carry the buses that thread the district and link it back to central Anchorage.
To the north the fence of Elmendorf Air Force Base marks a hard edge, the airbase whose wartime construction first drew workers to these blocks. Look east and the reason for the name stands plain, because the wall of the Chugach Mountains rises straight from the flats and closes off the horizon behind the rooftops. The mountains are the monument here.
What is the history of Mountain View?
The neighbourhood began with a runway. In the 1940s these flats filled with housing for the crews building Elmendorf Air Force Base, and the quick wartime lots made Mountain View one of the oldest corners of Anchorage. Cheap homes drew newcomers.
Wave after wave of arrivals settled the blocks along Mountain View Drive, until the district grew into one of the most varied places in the United States, its storefronts and congregations mixing origins from across the Pacific, Asia and Alaska itself. The mountains kept the name the mapmakers gave it.
Where is Mountain View?
Mountain View lies on the flats of northeast Anchorage, boxed between the Glenn Highway and the fence of Elmendorf Air Force Base, with McCarrey Street and Post Road holding its eastern and western edges below the Chugach Mountains. The land runs flat to the range.
