The western end of the National Mall runs along Foggy Bottom's southern edge, where the Lincoln Memorial houses its seated Statue of Abraham Lincoln. Two war memorials stand nearby. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Memorial sit a short walk across Constitution Gardens.
Closer to the White House, the Corcoran Gallery of Art stands on 17th Street. Further east along the Mall run the Smithsonian museums of the Smithsonian Institution.
What is the history of Foggy Bottom?
Foggy Bottom grew on low, marshy ground beside the Potomac River, and that damp riverfront gave the neighborhood its name. Through the 1800s it was a working-class industrial quarter, with a gas works, breweries, and glass plants clouding the air. The fog and smoke named it.
In the 20th century the State Department built its headquarters here, and the name Foggy Bottom became shorthand for the department itself. George Washington University later spread across much of the old industrial ground.
