The name came before the city. Brookhaven was North Atlanta before it was Brookhaven, a stretch of suburb in western DeKalb County that carried a directional name rather than one of its own. A referendum changed that on 31 July 2012.

The vote made it DeKalb County's eleventh city, and incorporation followed on 17 December 2012, the date municipal operations began. What the new city inherited was older than itself. Thirty-one square kilometres is the whole of it, which is small for a city and large for a neighbourhood. Incorporation gave that ground a council, a name of its own and a place on the map of Georgia that North Atlanta never had.
