Most of Nampa's beds stand within sight of Interstate 84, taking the through traffic and the overflow from Boise, with parking at the door and an exit that puts a driver in the capital inside half an hour. The corridor wins on convenience alone. Trucks use the same ramps and the noise comes with the location, so a room on the far side of the building is worth asking for when the highway sits that close.
Downtown offers the opposite bargain: the blocks around Nampa Presbyterian Church and the Nampa First Methodist Episcopal Church keep the older frontage, and a room there trades the easy ramp for streets worth walking after dark. Canyon County is not otherwise a walking county. Term time changes the arithmetic.
Northwest Nazarene University and the College of Western Idaho pull families and visiting staff into the same small supply at predictable points in the year, so a late booking in a graduation week finds the whole of Canyon County unusually full. The Warhawk Air Museum sits on its own errand. Visitors coming chiefly for the aircraft can weigh a room near the museum against one in the old centre, though the drive between them is short enough that the decision carries far less weight here than it would in a larger city.

What is the history of Nampa?
Everything here starts with the name. Nampa may take its name from a Shoshoni word for moccasin or footprint, and the toponymist William O. Bright traced it instead to the Shoshoni nampai, meaning foot, which leaves the city carrying an origin told in a language older than any building it owns. The record gives 1886 for the founding.
What followed is legible in two congregations, the Nampa Presbyterian Church and the Nampa First Methodist Episcopal Church, whose buildings mark the first settled decades of a town that had Canyon County largely to itself. Houses record the people. The H. Orton Wiley House and the Jacob P. Lockman House carry two family names from the years before the campuses arrived and before the Treasure Valley filled in around them.
Education stayed. Northwest Nazarene University and the College of Western Idaho between them give Nampa a student body big enough to be felt on the streets, which is not usual for a city of this size, and it is the clearest thing separating Nampa from the farm towns of Canyon County. Aircraft came later still.
The Warhawk Air Museum gathered a wartime collection that pulls visitors from well beyond the Treasure Valley, and it does more than any older building to put Nampa on an itinerary rather than on a route between Boise and somewhere else.

The Treasure Valley holds it. Nampa lies in Southwest Idaho about twenty miles west of Boise and roughly six west of Meridian, on level valley floor where Canyon County spreads out around the built-up streets without any ridge to interrupt it. Interstate 84 draws the working line.
Growth has followed that road rather than any contour, which is the whole of the local geography in one sentence.
What is the climate of Nampa?
The Treasure Valley sets the terms. Summers on this floor of Southwest Idaho run hot and dry while winters stay cold under the temperate band, and the open ground between Nampa and Boise does nothing to soften either end of that range. Midsummer asks for a shaded seat.

Interstate 84 does the work. The highway runs west out of Boise past Meridian and into Nampa, which puts the capital about twenty miles off and Meridian roughly six, so a car turns the whole Boise metropolitan area into a single working unit. Most visitors arrive that way.
Anyone flying into the region lands nearer the capital and finishes the trip through Canyon County by road, over a distance short enough that the choice of base can rest on the room rather than on the journey.
