Barelas keeps few rooms of its own, and travellers who base themselves here do it for the National Hispanic Cultural Center or for the walk up into Downtown rather than for any concentration of hotels. Coal Avenue is the dividing line. North of it the Downtown blocks carry the beds; south of it the triangle runs quiet toward the ABQ BioPark Zoo and the Rio Grande, which is exactly why people pick it.

Two draws sit inside the Barelas triangle. The National Hispanic Cultural Center opened in 2000 and reset what the neighbourhood was known for, while the ABQ BioPark Zoo occupies the ground running down toward the Rio Grande. Barelas predates Old Town.
The San Felipe de Neri Church, the Albuquerque Museum and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science all belong to the wider city, close enough to reach in an afternoon but counted against other Albuquerque neighbourhoods.
What is the history of Barelas?
Settlement here was formally established in 1662, which makes Barelas older than Old Town and older than the city that eventually swallowed it. Barelas stood alone before Albuquerque reached it. The railroad-driven growth of the 1880s pulled the village inside the city, and the BNSF railroad tracks that still mark one of its three edges are the reason the absorption happened when it did.
The Barelas name outlived the merger. Decades as one of the city's hardest-pressed quarters followed, and the opening of the National Hispanic Cultural Center in 2000 marked the turn.
