What is the history of Center City?

Center City is the original Philadelphia, the grid surveyed between the Delaware and the Schuylkill in 1682. Independence Hall saw the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution debated within its walls, and for a decade the new republic was run from these blocks. The city spread outward only after 1854, when consolidation drew in the surrounding districts.
