Port Richmond grew as one of Philadelphia's working neighbourhoods, its past tied to the spread of the surrounding Pennsylvania city rather than a charter of its own. The name took hold on the city's map. Ordinary trades filled it in, block after block, as Philadelphia pushed outward from its old core.
