What are the main landmarks in Dishman?

Dishman's defining feature is the ground it was quarried from. The Dishman Hills rise straight off the district's southern edge, a jumble of granite outcrops, potholes, and gullies scoured by the Glacial Lake Missoula floods and grown over with ponderosa pine. Camp Caro sits at their foot on Sargent Road, a county lodge and trailhead on land the Caro family gave away in the 1940s.

Everything else here is roadside. Sprague Avenue and Appleway Boulevard carry the shopfronts west to east, while Argonne Road and Mullan Road come down from Interstate 90 as a one-way pair.

What is the history of Dishman?

Dishman began with a quarry. Addison Dishman opened it in 1889 in the granite cliffs just south of the settlement, and his surname went onto the ground around it. A trading post followed in 1895, built for his brother Wilton, with a saloon and a blacksmith shop behind it.

The crossroads became a stop on the electric railway east to Coeur d'Alene. Apples were the chief crop until about 1925, when truck farming took over. Dishman never incorporated, and in 2003 it was folded into the new city of Spokane Valley alongside Opportunity and Veradale.

Dishman covers the valley floor between Interstate 90 and the Dishman Hills, on the western side of Spokane Valley and immediately west of Opportunity.
