Opportunity is residential ground crossed by an arterial, and rooms inside it are scarce. Sprague Avenue carries the shops and the drive-in trade, but the hotels of Spokane Valley gather further east, around the Interstate 90 interchanges. That is a few minutes east.
Staying here suits a traveller who wants a car park at the door, a quick run onto Interstate 90 by way of Pines Road, and the Appleway Trail for a flat walk before breakfast. If you want an evening on foot, book in Spokane instead, a separate city a short drive west down the valley.

What are the main landmarks in Opportunity?
Opportunity's landmark is the Opportunity Township Hall, a stuccoed Spanish Colonial Revival building raised on Sprague Avenue in 1912. It ran the township's business. Weddings, film shows, and library services used the same rooms until Washington abolished townships.
The hall stands on the National Register of Historic Places and now holds the Spokane Valley Heritage Museum, whose archive of valley photographs, maps, and yearbooks spans a century and a half. One block south, the Appleway Trail crosses Pines Road on the old Milwaukee Road right-of-way. Opportunity Presbyterian Church has kept its corner since the orchard years.
What is the history of Opportunity?
Opportunity took its name from the winning entry in a naming contest and organised itself as a township in 1909. Wells driven into the valley aquifer watered the orchards that followed, and Sprague Avenue, then called Appleway, ran through apple trees for most of its length across the valley. The apple trade slid through the 1920s.
Washington stripped townships of the power to tax in 1969, a county-wide vote dissolved them in 1974, and Opportunity carried on as a census place with no government of its own. That ended in 2003, when the City of Spokane Valley incorporated and made the old township one of its neighbourhoods.
