What is the history of Andijon?
Andijon is an old city of the Silk Road. In the rich Fergana Valley it was for centuries a market where the caravans of the road met, trading in silk, horses, and the fruit of the valley. Its greatest son changed the world.
Here in 1483 was born Babur, the prince who lost his valley kingdom, seized Kabul, and went on to found the Mughal empire in India. The valley passed through many hands. Andijon was ruled from Kokand and then by the khans, until the Russians took the Fergana Valley in the nineteenth century and built their railway to carry its cotton.
An earthquake struck the old town. In 1902 a great quake threw down much of Andijon, and the city was raised again around its mosque and bazaars. The old madrasa still stands by the square.

Andijon lies in the eastern Fergana Valley of Uzbekistan, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. The city sits on the fertile plain of the valley, ringed by the high Tian Shan ranges, watered by canals from the mountain rivers, in the far east of the land. Snowy ranges rise all around.

Andijon's climate is continental and short on rain. Hot, dry summers bake the valley, and cold winters bring frost and some snow, tempered by the ring of mountains, with most rain in the spring. Dust hazes the plain in summer.

Andijon lies in the eastern Fergana Valley, near the Kyrgyz border. Roads and rail run to it from Tashkent and Fergana across and around the mountains, and the valley towns lie close along the plain. Minibuses fan out from Andijon to the other towns of the Fergana Valley.
