Where to stay in Chirchiq
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Tashkent is close. Chirchiq sits about 32 km northeast of it along the Chirchiq river, which puts a room here within a short run of a far larger hotel market, and most travellers weigh the two against each other before booking. The city has its own reasons.
Anyone working in the Tashkent Region, or heading up toward the Chatkal Mountains, saves the double journey by basing in Chirchiq rather than driving out from Tashkent each morning. The Zahriddin Muhammad Bobur haykali is the monument named on the city's own list, and a stay within reach of it covers Chirchiq's short roster of set-piece sights without a car. Sites lie outside the built-up area.
Zargʻaldoqtepa, Xaittepa, Vodinkoʻltepa and the other -tepa places recorded in the Yuqorichirchiq district need transport, and a bed in Chirchiq shortens that considerably compared with one in Tashkent or anywhere further down the valley. The river gives the city its axis. Chirchiq is laid out along it across roughly 34 square kilometres, so the practical distinction is between blocks near the water and blocks set back toward the slopes, and the monastery grounds fall on the older side of that split.
You want the riverside blocks if the Troickiy Georgivckiy monastery and the walk along the water are the point.
About Chirchiq
The mountains start just behind.
What is Chirchiq known for?
Chirchiq occupies a stretch of the Chatkal Mountains northeast of Tashkent, and the river that shares the city's name runs through it, which gives a district-level city of the Tashkent Region a setting that its 1935 founding date does not suggest. Heritage sites ring it. Zargʻaldoqtepa, Xitoytepa and Tunkattepa are among the recorded places around Chirchiq, and the Troickiy Georgivckiy monastery adds a standing building to a list otherwise made of sites.
What are the main landmarks in Chirchiq?
The list is unusually long for its size. Chirchiq carries a roster of recorded places that runs from the Troickiy Georgivckiy monastery through Zargʻaldoqtepa, Xitoytepa, Xaittepa, Vodinkoʻltepa and Tunkattepa, most of them in the Yuqorichirchiq district around the city. Qavardan shahriston is on it too.
Suronota and Pistali bobo close a roster where the repeated -tepa ending marks how much of it lies out in the Tashkent Region countryside, and the Zahriddin Muhammad Bobur haykali supplies a monument of a different kind.
What is the history of Chirchiq?
As a city, Chirchiq is barely a century old. Chirchiq dates from 1935, which makes it a twentieth-century foundation in a part of the Tashkent Region where the recorded sites around it are very much older, and that gap is the most striking thing about its record. The ground was not empty.
Zargʻaldoqtepa, Xitoytepa, Xaittepa, Tunkattepa, Vodinkoʻltepa and Qavardan shahriston are all logged in the Yuqorichirchiq district, a density of named places that a valley floor accumulates over a long occupation. Religion left a separate mark. The Troickiy Georgivckiy monastery is the one standing building on the city's list, the rest of which is made of sites out in the Yuqorichirchiq district rather than streets in Chirchiq.
Bobur is commemorated here as well. The Zahriddin Muhammad Bobur haykali carries a name from far outside the twentieth century, which sets the memory of a much earlier figure inside a city founded in 1935. Water explains the position.
Chirchiq took the name of the river it stands on, some 32 km from Tashkent in the Chatkal Mountains, and the corridor the river follows is what the earlier sites, the monastery and the modern city all share.
Where is Chirchiq?
The Chatkal Mountains close the far side. Chirchiq occupies about 34 square kilometres of the Tashkent Region in eastern Uzbekistan, strung along the Chirchiq river some 32 km from Tashkent, with the range rising beyond the built-up ground. Its climate sits in the temperate band.
Everything around the city, the Yuqorichirchiq district sites, the valley floor and the slopes above, belongs to the same corridor the river holds open.
What is the climate of Chirchiq?
The Chatkal Mountains do the shaping. Chirchiq sits in the temperate band with that range directly behind it, so the city's year is a mountain-valley one rather than the flatter pattern of the ground stretching away toward Tashkent. Altitude is the variable.
The Tashkent Region spreads out below, and the difference between a season on the valley floor at Chirchiq and the same season up in the Chatkal Mountains is the thing that governs when the higher ground is reachable.
How do you get to Chirchiq?
Tashkent is the doorway. The road up the Chirchiq valley covers about 32 km between the two, which makes the trip out to Chirchiq a short one by any standard and puts the city inside the daily orbit of the Tashkent Region. Beyond it the ground rises.
Traffic continuing past Chirchiq climbs toward the Chatkal Mountains, and the Yuqorichirchiq district sites lie off that same route rather than in the city itself.
