What is the history of Urganch?
Urgench carries the name of an ancient city. The old Urgench, once the great capital of Khorezm, stood downstream on the Amu Darya, a rich city of the Silk Road that gave the world the scholars al-Khwarizmi and al-Biruni. The river moved and the old city died.
When the Amu Darya shifted its course, old Urgench was left dry and fell to ruin, and its life drained away over the centuries. So a new Urgench was built upstream. Under the khans of Khiva a fresh town rose on the living river, and it took the old city's name, though its old neighbour Khiva kept the palaces and the fame.
The Russians made it a regional town. In their day and after, Urgench grew as the seat and railhead of Khorezm, a modern city of avenues among the oasis fields. The old oasis still rings the town.
