Châu Đốc keeps its beds near the water. Guesthouses and hotels sit in the streets behind the riverfront, close to the boat landings that handle the traffic up and down the delta, and that is the practical side of town to sleep on. Boats leave early.
The riverfront is short enough to walk end to end before the heat builds. Landings matter more than car parks. If you are moving on toward the border with Cambodia, a room close to the landings saves an early scramble across town, and the same streets put the markets of Châu Đốc at the door.
Away from the front, the town is quieter and plainer. Streets set back from the water hold smaller places used mostly by traders and by people with business in the former An Giang Province, and they fill less often than the riverside rooms. Canals replace streets.
Choice narrows quickly out there. Beyond the built-up blocks the floodplain takes over, and beds become a matter of what a village along the canal happens to keep, which suits travellers who want the delta itself rather than a town.

A town sitting against the frontier that Vietnam shares with Cambodia lives on movement across it, and the trade and the crossings of such a settlement shaped this one long before any modern administration drew its limits.
Water carried all of it. In a delta where channels served as the main roads, a settlement placed where those channels concentrate held a position worth holding, and Châu Đốc's early importance rested on that rather than on any fortification or harbour. Administration has moved around it since.
Châu Đốc was a city of An Giang Province, and both of those designations have since been overtaken by reorganisation, leaving the town's name attached to a place rather than to a unit of government. The town itself did not move. It keeps the same relationship to the border with Cambodia and the same relationship to the water, and those two facts have outlasted every province that has claimed it, which is the usual pattern for delta towns whose geography was fixed long before their paperwork.
Where is Châu Đốc?
Cambodia begins just beyond the fields. Châu Đốc occupies a stretch of the Mekong Delta near that frontier, on ground the floods reach and leave each year, and the former An Giang Province around it is farmland cut through by water. Hills are absent.
What passes for relief in this country is the raised bank of a canal, and the town's shape follows those banks rather than any contour of its own.
What is the climate of Châu Đốc?
Châu Đốc counts a wet season and a dry one, nothing more. The tropics keep Châu Đốc warm without much variation, and what changes through the year is the water, since the monsoon raises the delta and the dry months let it fall back. Floodwater is the calendar.
Fields around the town go under and drain again on that schedule, and travellers notice the difference less in the temperature than in how much of the former An Giang Province is water at the time.
How do you get to Châu Đốc?
Roads and boats both work. Châu Đốc lies out toward the Cambodian frontier, so the approach from within the Mekong Delta is a run across flat country on the delta roads, with the canals offering the older alternative for anyone in no hurry. The crossing is nearby.
Traffic bound for Cambodia passes through the town, which is why Châu Đốc sees more through-travellers than a delta town of its size would otherwise.
