Bạc Liêu is small enough that the Bac Lieu provincial museum and the road out are the two poles a room sits between. Walking covers the whole town. A town of this size in the Mekong Delta keeps its beds within a few streets of one another, so the decision is less about which quarter than about whether the stay is built around the town itself or around the country beyond it.
The museum side is the town side. Travellers crossing the delta treat Bạc Liêu as a night between larger stops. Ho Chi Minh City lies at one end of the run and Cà Mau at the other, and a bed here breaks a long day on the delta roads without asking anyone to plan around it.
Choice is limited but adequate. Rooms are the plain provincial kind, meant for people working across the former Bạc Liêu Province rather than for holidays, and the ones near the museum are the easiest to reach on foot from the bus stop. If you want a base for the far south of the delta rather than a stopover, Cà Mau sits further out and Bạc Liêu makes the shorter reach back toward Ho Chi Minh City.

What is the history of Bạc Liêu?

Bạc Liêu Province was drawn around it and the town became the capital, which brought the offices and the records and eventually a provincial museum, and gave a medium-sized place in the Mekong Delta a weight its size alone would not have earned. Administrative maps have been redrawn since. Bạc Liêu Province no longer exists in the form that gave the town its standing, and the city itself is described as a former provincial city, its territory counted with Cà Mau.
Titles went, the place stayed. What a delta town does is set by the land around it rather than by which province claims it, and Bạc Liêu has gone on serving as the market and service centre for its stretch of southern Vietnam through every version of the map. The Mekong River explains more than any charter.
Its extreme southern end spreads into the delta this town sits in, and the channels, not the provincial boundaries, are what put people here in the first place.
Where is Bạc Liêu?
Flat land, and a lot of it. Bạc Liêu lies in the Mekong Delta well toward its far end, on ground that carries no relief worth the name and where channels rather than any hill decide how a journey runs. Cà Mau lies further out.
The town holds the middle distance between that last corner and the wider delta behind it, on ground running toward the extreme southern end of the Mekong River.
What is the climate of Bạc Liêu?
The delta sets the year. Bạc Liêu's calendar divides into a wet half and a dry one, the pattern the whole Mekong Delta keeps, and the town registers the change in the level of its channels long before it registers anything in the temperature. Warmth here never really lets go.
The town stands in the tropical band near the southern end of Vietnam and runs warm through every month, so the useful question about any date is how much rain it carries rather than how hot it will be.
How do you get to Bạc Liêu?
Bạc Liêu sits on the road south. The run from Ho Chi Minh City down through the Mekong Delta toward Cà Mau passes the town, which is why most arrivals here belong to people already headed somewhere further on. Buses work that line between Ho Chi Minh City and Cà Mau.
Nothing about the approach is complicated, and once the delta road has done its part the town is small enough to cross on foot from the Bac Lieu provincial museum to the far edge.
