In colonial days planters found that the rich red basalt of the plateau grew coffee well, and estates spread across the highlands around a new market town. Coffee made the modern city. After hard years of war and change, settlers poured onto the plateau and planted coffee by the mile, until Buôn Ma Thuột became the coffee capital of a country that grew among the most in the world.
The old ways held on too. Still the Ê Đê kept their longhouses, their gongs, and their tales, and the elephants of Ban Don and the waterfalls of the forests drew visitors, so that the city lived by its coffee, its culture, and its red land. The beans still fill the yards to dry.
