The shore and the hills split the choice in Tuy Hòa. Hotels along the seafront put the sand and the open water at the door, and that strip is where most of the city's newer rooms have gone up. Mornings are bright there.
Seafront rooms fill first in the warm months, though the walk from the centre to the sand takes only a few minutes. Anyone who wants the shore without a long walk should book on that side, since the city centre sits back from the water on the flats the Đà Rằng River laid down. Inland, the centre keeps the everyday business.
Streets around the markets and the bus stands hold the plainer rooms, with Nhạn Mountain and its Champa Temple close enough to climb before breakfast and Chóp Chài Mountain standing beyond. Rooms are simpler here. The Champa Temple looks down on the whole city from the summit.
Out past the two hills the city thins into farmland and river flats, where beds are few and the road toward Nha Trang or Quy Nhơn is the reason most people are there at all.

What is Tuy Hòa known for?
Nhạn Mountain carries a Champa Temple on its summit, and Chóp Chài Mountain rises a little apart, so Tuy Hòa is one of the few coastal towns in Vietnam with real relief in the middle of its streets. The Đà Rằng River built the ground. Its alluvium made the flats the city occupies, and the shore, the river mouth and the two summits together account for most of what brings travellers off the road between Nha Trang and Quy Nhơn.
What are the main landmarks in Tuy Hòa?
Nhạn Mountain is the one to climb. A Champa Temple stands on its summit, the sight that puts Tuy Hòa on an itinerary at all, and the view from the top takes in the city, the river mouth and the sea at once. Chóp Chài Mountain rises nearby.
The Đà Rằng River and the coast supply the rest, with the flats between them holding the streets that most visitors only pass through.
What is the history of Tuy Hòa?
Tuy Hòa was the capital of Phú Yên. The province has since been dissolved into a larger unit, but the city spent its administrative life as that province's seat, and the offices, markets and road links that come with such a role shaped the plan of its streets. The Champa Temple is older than all of it.
Cham builders raised the shrine on Nhạn Mountain long before the modern province existed, and it remains the one structure in Tuy Hòa carrying a name whose work on this coast predates that province by centuries. The river did the rest of the work. Alluvium carried down the lower Đà Rằng River built the flat ground the city stands on, and settlement followed the water and the sea, since the flats gave level land while the coast gave a landing.
Both hills stayed inside the town. Position kept it in the middle. Halfway between Nha Trang and Quy Nhơn, Tuy Hòa never grew into either, and the two larger cities took the traffic while the smaller one kept its two summits and its quiet shore.
Where is Tuy Hòa?
Flat ground, two sudden hills. Tuy Hòa occupies alluvial land laid down by the lower Đà Rằng River as it reaches the coast, and Chóp Chài Mountain and Nhạn Mountain break that flatness inside the city limits. The sea forms one edge.
Nha Trang and Quy Nhơn sit at either end of the run, which leaves Tuy Hòa about midway along this stretch of the South Central Coast.
What is the climate of Tuy Hòa?
The sea sets the temperature here. Tuy Hòa lies in the tropics with the water on its doorstep, so the heat stays even and the nights rarely cool the way they do up in the highlands. Rain comes in bursts.
The wet season arrives with the monsoon off the sea and the flats of the Đà Rằng River take the run-off, while the dry months leave the summit of Nhạn Mountain clear enough to see the whole coast.
How do you get to Tuy Hòa?
Arrivals come along the coast. Tuy Hòa sits about halfway between Nha Trang and Quy Nhơn, so the coastal route linking those two cities is the way most people reach it, whether by bus or by car. The drive is short either way.
Inland the ground rises quickly, and the Đà Rằng River is the line the city follows back from the shore.
