What is the history of Vinh?
Vinh guarded the road to the south. For ages it stood as a fortress on the coast road between the north and the south of Vietnam, and armies and traders passed through the town. An emperor planned a capital here.
When the great Quang Trung rose, he began to build a citadel on Quyet hill and thought to make Vinh his capital, though the plan died with him. The province bred famous men. From the villages of Nghe An came scholars and leaders, and the birthplace of Ho Chi Minh lies close to the town.
War laid the city low. In the fighting of the last century Vinh was bombed almost to rubble, then rebuilt with wide streets and new blocks, and it grew again as the market of Nghe An, keeping its river, its hill, and its history. The Lam still runs to the sea.
