Prizren grew up on the Prizren River below the Sharr Mountains, and its old town dates back to the 14th century. Trade and faith built it. Under Ottoman rule the city filled with mosques, hammams, and merchant houses, and the Sinan Pasha Mosque and Gazi Mehmet Pasha's Mosque rose among the stone lanes as the town became a regional centre.
Older Christian foundations survived alongside them, from the Church of the Holy Saviour to the Monastery of the Holy Archangels outside the walls.
