Concordia grew on the Uruguay river. A river port on the great border river, it shipped the goods of Entre Ríos and grew rich on the orange groves of the warm north. Jewish colonists settled the land.
In the late eighteen-hundreds Baron Hirsch's colonies brought Jewish farmers to Entre Ríos, and Concordia became a center of the famous Jewish gaucho country. A castle by the river drew a famous guest. Across from the town stood the Palacio San Carlos, a grand ruined château, where the airman Saint-Exupéry once stayed, and its story is woven into The Little Prince.
The river brought springs and a dam. In our own age hot springs were tapped for spas and a great dam was built at Salto Grande, and Concordia grew as the citrus and spa city of the river, keeping its groves, its springs, and its river. The oranges still fill the groves.
