Paraná grew as a river town on the high bank. Settlers spread across from Santa Fe in colonial times and built a town on the bluffs above the great river, which took its name from the Paraná itself. For a time it ruled a nation.
When the provinces split from Buenos Aires in the eighteen-fifties, Paraná became the capital of the Argentine Confederation, and its plaza and cathedral gained a grand air. The capital soon moved away. Buenos Aires and the provinces reunited, and Paraná settled back into the seat of Entre Ríos, a quiet green city of the river.
The river shaped its life. Its people laid out a great park along the bluffs, with walks and beaches above the water, and in the twentieth century a tunnel was dug beneath the river to link the town with Santa Fe. The cathedral still crowns the plaza.
