About Lakshmīpur

What is Lakshmīpur known for?

Lakshmipur is the largest town of its district, and the seat from which the district's administration and the Sadar Upazila are both run. The name means wealth. Lakshmi is the goddess of fortune, and pur means a town; together they make a city of good fortune.

Khoya Sagar Dighi and the old Zamindar Bari at Dalal Bazar are what people go to see.

What are the main landmarks in Lakshmīpur?

Khoya Sagar Dighi is the town's old tank, and the Zamindar Bari at Dalal Bazar its old great house. The Munsefi Court of 1870 brought the lawyers who built the rest: an English school that is now Lakshmipur Model High School, a public library, and a town hall. The Meghna is the district's river.

What is the history of Lakshmīpur?

The name is older than the town. A mouza called Lakshmipur appears in Kailash Chandra Singha's Rajmala, the history of Tripura, and another account traces the name to a pargana called Lakshmidaha. Suresh Chandranath Majumdar, writing in Rajpurush Yogibansha, put the first of the Dalal Bazar zamindars as Lakshmi Narayan Ray.

Raja Gaur Kishore Ray Chowdhury of that line had a wife named Lakshmi Priya, and some historians take the town's name from one of the two. Administration came later. A thana was established in 1860, and the Munsefi Court followed in 1870.

The pourashava was formed on 1 September 1976, the subdivision on 19 July 1979, and the district on 28 February 1984, each step raising the town's standing.

Where is Lakshmīpur?

Lakshmipur stands on the low delta of southeastern Bangladesh, seventeen metres above the sea at its average. The Meghna flows through the district. The pourashava is split into fifteen wards and forty mahallas across a little under thirty square kilometres.

What is the climate of Lakshmīpur?

Lakshmipur has a tropical climate shaped by the monsoon. Hot, damp months build before the rains arrive. The monsoon then falls heavily across the delta, and the low ground around the town floods readily once the rivers rise.

The cool season is short and dry.

How do you get to Lakshmīpur?

There is no railway at Lakshmipur and no airport. Travellers coming by rail take the Upakul Express or the Noakhali Express from Kamalapur in Dhaka to Chowmuhani in Noakhali, then a bus. By water the route runs from Sadarghat in Dhaka to Chandpur, and on by road.

Buses from Dhaka leave Saidabad by day, and Jhigatola, Mohammadpur, Mirpur-10, Uttara, and Savar at night. The nearest airport is at Chattogram.
