What is the history of Motijheel?
Motijheel took shape as Dhaka's money grew. Its name recalls an old oxbow lake, and the ground filled with bank buildings, insurance offices and trading houses as the city became the commercial capital of the region. History pressed hard on its western edge.
Suhrawardy Udyan witnessed the declaration of independence, the Shaheed Minar rose to honour those killed in the language movement, and the Bangladesh National Museum gathered the record of it all. That memorial belt still frames the working district.
