Pallabi's landmarks are its market and its metro. Benarasi Palli, the weaving village of Mirpur, draws buyers for the silk Benarasi saris made on its looms. The Turag River guards the north.
Along the raised viaduct of MRT Line 6, the Pallabi metro station and the neighbouring Mirpur 11 station carry the district into the wider grid of Dhaka. Kalshi marks the way east.
What is the history of Pallabi?
Pallabi is a young administrative corner of Dhaka. It was cut out of the greater Mirpur area as a separate thana in 1995, as the city pushed north across the low ground toward the Turag River. The metro came much later.
When MRT Line 6 opened, the Pallabi metro station tied these Mirpur streets into the fast spine of the growing capital. The land by the river had been settled long before either.
