Kiel, Antwerp — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Kiel is a neighbourhood on the south side of Antwerp, outside the R1 ring, known for Renaat Braem's high-rise housing and the club Beerschot.

About Kiel

Where to stay in Kiel

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Kiel answers to the R1. The ring road separates it from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and the FOMU Photo Museum Antwerp, so a room here trades a walk to the galleries for quieter streets after dark. Renaat Braem's towers mark the skyline.

Buurtsporthal Kiel and the football club Beerschot fix the everyday rhythm of the quarter, which stays residential in a way the inner districts of Antwerpen no longer are. Choose Kiel if you want an Antwerpen address without the crowds of the old centre.

About Kiel

What are the main landmarks in Kiel?

The Wooneenheid Kiel, a group of high-rise blocks designed by the architect Renaat Braem, gives the neighbourhood its tall profile and brings architecture visitors out past the R1. Buurtsporthal Kiel covers the local end. Beyond the ring stand the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and the FOMU Photo Museum Antwerp, both a short ride from the quarter.

The Middelheim Museum sets its sculpture collection in open parkland east of Kiel.

What is the history of Kiel?

Two arrivals shaped Kiel. The R1 was driven around the centre of Antwerpen and left this quarter outside the ring, near enough to reach on foot but cut from the old streets by a motorway. Renaat Braem drew the second.

His Wooneenheid Kiel brought high-rise blocks to the quarter, and the neighbourhood has been read through those towers ever since. Football did the rest, and Beerschot keeps Kiel on the sporting map of Antwerp.

Where is Kiel?

Kiel lies just outside the R1 ring on the southern side of Antwerp, on flat ground between the motorway and the parkland running east toward the Middelheim Museum.
