About Linkeroever
What are the main landmarks in Linkeroever?
Linkeroever's landmark list belongs to the other bank. From the left-bank waterfront the whole set lines up in one view: Het Steen on the quay, the tower of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal behind it, and the red stone of the Museum aan de Stroom beyond the old quays. Nothing here competes with that.
What Linkeroever offers instead is the vantage point, plus a short crossing to the Red Star Line Museum and the printing halls of the Museum Plantin-Moretus.
What is the history of Linkeroever?
Before Antwerp took it in, this was farmland called Borger Weert Polder. The ground belonged to Zwijndrecht, a separate municipality on the left bank, until 19 March 1923, when the strip was formally attached to Antwerp and renamed for its position on the river. A polder became a borough.
Most of what stands on Linkeroever went up after that transfer, which is why the quarter reads younger than the streets across the Scheldt.
