Where to stay in Lillo

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Beds are scarce in Lillo. The fort village holds a short row of houses, Poldermuseum Lillo and Saint Benedict church, and no hotel quarter of any kind, so nearly every visit runs out from Antwerp and back the same afternoon. That leaves the polder to itself after dark. Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo, the wider Antwerp district around it, sits back from the quays, and a room there trades the fort walls for easier parking.

About Lillo

What are the main landmarks in Lillo?

The fort holds everything. Poldermuseum Lillo sets out the polder country that the Port of Antwerp has built over, and it is the clearest account of what the docks replaced on this bank of the Schelde. Saint Benedict church stands a few doors along, plain-walled and low.

Lillo counts a second church as well, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Hemelvaartkerk. From the ramparts of Fort Lillo the working port stands on every side.

What is the history of Lillo?

Lillo was a village before it was a fragment. Farms and houses spread along the Schelde north of Antwerp until the port pushed north in turn, and dock after dock took the ground the village had stood on. What survived is small.

The core inside Fort Lillo was left standing when the rest went, and the name survives in Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo, the Antwerp district the village now belongs to.

Where is Lillo?

Lillo sits on the Schelde bank north of Antwerp, a pocket of houses and dyke ringed by the docks of the Port of Antwerp.
