About Oblast Dobrich

Wheat country meets a coast.

What is Oblast Dobrich known for?

Southern Dobruja is the fertile ground behind Bulgaria's granary, and the province carries that farmland east until it runs out at the Black Sea, where Balchik, Kavarna and Shabla take over. Dobrich holds the administration for all eight municipalities. The border with Romania closes the province off at its northern edge, a short land frontier that has moved more than once.

Where is Oblast Dobrich?

Four boundaries enclose the province. The Black Sea takes the eastern side, Varna Province the southern, Shumen and Silistra provinces the western, and Romania the northern, where the land frontier between the two countries runs only a short way. Inside them lies Southern Dobruja.

The region is level, worked farmland, and the soil is why the whole of it answers to the description of Bulgaria's granary rather than to anything the coastline offers. Varna Province lies to the south, so the land approaches come from three Bulgarian provinces and from Romania, with the Black Sea holding the remaining side. Balchik, Kavarna and Shabla sit on the sea.

Between them they give the province its only maritime frontage, and Dobrich, set inland, is the point from which all three are reached. Administration runs through eight municipalities, with Dobrich carrying the province's name and its central role. Romania is close throughout.

The northern boundary is a short one, but it puts the province in contact with Romania along its whole upper edge, and Shumen and Silistra provinces close the remaining land side to the west.

What is Oblast Dobrich like?

Farming sets the tone. Southern Dobruja earned the name of Bulgaria's granary through the work done on its fields, and that inheritance shows up in the rhythm of the province more plainly than in any single institution or building. Dobrich is the ninth largest city in the country, which gives the province a centre large enough to hold institutions of its own.

The coast pulls the other way. Balchik, Kavarna and Shabla belong to a Black Sea culture of ports and shore settlement that has little to do with the grain fields immediately behind them, and the province contains both without merging them. Borders have moved through here.

The province was part of Romania between 1913 and 1940, a period recorded plainly in the history of Southern Dobruja and in the shape of the border that followed it. Bulgarian is spoken across the province. Eight municipalities share the administrative load, and the cultural weight sits with Dobrich, the fields of Southern Dobruja and the three coastal towns in roughly equal measure.

The Black Sea is the constant edge, and the granary the constant interior.

What is the history of Oblast Dobrich?

The border here has moved. Southern Dobruja was part of Romania between 1913 and 1940, and the return of the territory to Bulgaria set the frame within which the modern province was later drawn. Dobrich Province itself dates from 1999.

Its eight municipalities and the city that names them carry an older settlement history than the administrative unit around them.

What is the climate of Oblast Dobrich?

The Black Sea does the moderating. Its water sits against the whole eastern edge of Dobrich Province, so Balchik, Kavarna and Shabla take their weather from it while the farmland of Southern Dobruja further inland runs to a more continental pattern. Dobrich sits inland enough to notice the difference.

How do you get to Oblast Dobrich?

Most arrivals come up from Varna Province, which shares the southern boundary and leaves Dobrich a short inland run from the shore at Balchik and Kavarna. Romania is the other way in. The land frontier along the northern edge is short, and crossings there feed traffic straight into Southern Dobruja rather than around it, with Shumen and Silistra provinces supplying the approaches from the west.

Shabla completes the coastal trio.
