Calacoto, La Paz — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Calacoto, or Qalaqutu, is a residential neighbourhood in the southern part of La Paz, set in the central zone of the Zona Sur.

About Calacoto

Where to stay in Calacoto

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Zona Sur sets the terms. A stay in Calacoto trades the pull of the centre for a residential quarter of houses and services, with the run into central La Paz measured in kilometres rather than in minutes on foot. Parroquia San Miguel and the Museo Histórico Militar are the two fixed points inside the zone.

Central La Paz answers the other way.

About Calacoto

What are the main landmarks in Calacoto?

Two entries carry the zone. Parroquia San Miguel stands as the neighbourhood's church, while the Museo Histórico Militar carries the military history of Bolivia in its name, both inside the residential spread of the Zona Sur. Nothing older is listed here.

La Paz keeps the rest, further out from Calacoto and the streets around it.

What is the history of Calacoto?

The name comes in two forms. Calacoto and Qalaqutu both attach to the same neighbourhood of La Paz Municipality, a place that grew into one of the largest residential zones in Bolivia on the strength of its houses and its services. The Zona Sur is ranked beside Equipetrol in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Cala Cala in Cochabamba.

Distance did the rest. The neighbourhood sits about 15 kilometres from the centre of the city, far enough to develop on its own terms.

Where is Calacoto?

The neighbourhood lies about 15 kilometres out from the centre of La Paz Municipality, in the middle of the Zona Sur.
