Recife holds the rooms. The hill is a place of pilgrimage rather than of hotels, and the eighth of December, when the monument was inaugurated, is a municipal holiday that fills it. A road was cut for that day.
It was opened before the inauguration to give access to the summit, and a bus terminal now stands closer to the image than it once did. A sports court occupies the old festival ground.

What are the main landmarks in Morro da Conceiçao?
The monument was made in France and shipped over. Vincentians of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul brought the image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição by sea in 1904, and it measures three and a third metres and stands on a plinth of a little over a metre. Rough stones make the base.
Above them the niche is formed of four cast-iron columns and a dome with an arrow at its top, and the figure stands on the globe with hands joined and a serpent crushed beneath her feet. A chapel followed in 1906. It was built close to the monument, and a parish church was later raised between it and the image, replaced by a new matriz in 2008.
Neither image nor chapel is listed, though the site has been raised to a sanctuary.
What is the history of Morro da Conceiçao?
A fortification was planned here and never built. During the second Dutch invasion the count of Bagnuolo designed one near the old Arraial Velho do Bom Jesus, and after the Dutch defeat the hill took his name, the Outeiro de Bagnuolo. It was renamed in 1900.
Outeiro da Bela Vista was the new name, and it lasted only four years. A bishop changed it again. Dom Luís Raimundo da Silva Brito had the monument raised on the summit in 1904 for the fiftieth anniversary of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, and holy missions were held there that October.
The people of Recife renamed the hill themselves. From those missions on it was the Morro da Conceição, and the inauguration on 8 December 1904 drew a crowd that turned the place into a site of pilgrimage. Casa Amarela let it go in 1988.
