What is the history of Orsha?
Orsha grew up as a fortress on the Dnieper. First named in the chronicles nearly a thousand years ago, it guarded the river crossing on the border between rival powers, and a castle rose on the point where the Orshitsa meets the great river. The lands were long fought over.
Orsha lay on the frontier between Lithuania, Poland, and Muscovy, and a great battle was fought near the town in 1514, one of the largest of its age in the region. Monks made it a place of books. In the seventeenth century the Kuteinsky Monastery outside the town became a famous centre of Orthodox printing and learning, one of the first in the Belarusian land.
War marked the modern city. In 1941 the first salvo of the Katyusha rockets was fired near Orsha, and the town was fought over and ruined before it rose again as a rail town of the east. The old castle mound still stands by the river.
Orsha keeps its monasteries and its memory on the Dnieper.

Orsha lies on the Dnieper in the east of Belarus. The city sits where the small Orshitsa joins the great river, on a plain of woods and fields in the Belarusian lake country, near the Russian border. Low wooded rises ring the town.

Orsha has a cool, damp continental climate. Mild green summers give way to long cold winters with deep snow, and rain and cloud spread through the year over the plain. Mist rises off the river in autumn.

Orsha lies on the main line between Minsk and Moscow in eastern Belarus. It is a great rail junction, where the lines from the capital, Russia, and the south all meet, and roads run down the Dnieper valley. Buses reach the river towns around.
