The Breitenrainplatz is the centre of the quartier, and the Breitenrainstrasse and Militärstrasse carry the traffic through it. Broad avenue-planted streets and rows of tenement housing with shops at street level set the character. Spitalacker adjoins south.

What is the history of Breitenrain?
The Breitenrain quartier grew at the same time as the Lorraine's, towards the end of the 1850s. A line from Olten reached the Wylerfeld in 1857, where a provisional station stood because the Rote Brücke over the Aare was not yet finished. Its old course along the Dammweg and Nordring is still the boundary with the Lorraine.
The cantonal military establishments moved out of the city to the Beundenfeld between 1873 and 1878, and the federal arsenals and horse stables followed between 1890 and 1893. By the early 1890s Breitenrain and the Länggasse were the fastest growing quarters in Bern, and this was the quarter of the middle class. Beundenfeld and Breitfeld once counted to it.
Where is Breitenrain?
Breitenrain lies northeast of Bern's Altstadt, with Spitalacker to the south and Beundenfeld to the east. Breitfeld is northeast. Most of Wyler falls inside the statistical district.
