What are the main landmarks in Zürich (Kreis 6) / Unterstrass?
Unterstrass's Liebfrauenkirche, built in 1893-94 to plans by August Hardegger, counts as the most important copy of an early Christian basilica on Swiss soil. The Pauluskirche holds the city's heaviest bells. The Friedhof Nordheim has Zürich's only crematorium still in use.
Laid out in 1900, the Friedhof Steinkluppe is the only Jewish cemetery in the city where burials no longer take place.
What is the history of Zürich (Kreis 6) / Unterstrass?
Unterstrass takes its name from the lower road, first recorded in 1272, which led from the old city of Zürich via Kloten to Bülach. The Irchel site belonged to the Strickhof, an agricultural school for the poor first founded in Lindau in 1818; after a pause from 1826 to 1846, a law of 15 February 1847 revived it. Voters approved its move in 1970.
