What are the main landmarks in Zürich (Kreis 9) / Altstetten?
The Alte Kirche Altstetten goes back to an early Romanesque church of the 11th century, and the present building dates from about 1303. Beside it, Werner Max Moser built the Neue Kirche, also called the Grosse Kirche Altstetten, from 1939 to 1941. Dezsö Ercsi's Heilig-Kreuz on the Saumackerstrasse followed in 1979.
The station tower by Max Vogt, of 1966, is a prize-winning high-rise.
What is the history of Zürich (Kreis 9) / Altstetten?
Altstetten was first recorded in 1249 as Altstetin, an Alemannic name meaning by the old dwellings. A Roman road from Chur to Baden had crossed its ground. Zürich bought the bailiwick on 17 January 1432 and ruled it until 1798.
In 1847 the line from Zürich to Baden, the Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn, opened a station here, and the village began to grow. The municipality joined Zürich in 1934.
