What is the history of Zunyi?
Zunyi turned the course of the Long March. In the winter of 1935 the Red Army, in retreat across China, halted in the town, and its leaders gathered in an old house to argue over the ruin of their cause. There Mao rose to command.
The conference gave him the lead of the army, and soon after he led it on the famous four crossings of the Chishui river, slipping the nets of its pursuers, so Zunyi is honoured across China as a cradle of the revolution. The mountains held older powers too. Long before, the Yang chieftains ruled these hills for centuries from the great fortress of Hailongtun, until a Ming army stormed it after a long siege.
The valleys make a famous liquor as well. Nearby at Maotai the distilleries brew the fierce sorghum spirit prized across the land, and the drink and the revolution both carry the region's name. The old meeting house still draws pilgrims.

Zunyi lies in the mountains of northern Guizhou in southwestern China. The city sits in a green river valley among the karst hills of the plateau, on the Xiang river, north of the provincial capital Guiyang. Limestone peaks rise around.

Zunyi has a mild, humid subtropical climate. Warm summers and cool winters cross the plateau, often wrapped in cloud and mist, and heavy rains fall in the summer months, while the winters stay grey and damp. Fog fills the valleys much of the year.

How do you get to Zunyi?
Zunyi lies in northern Guizhou, between Guiyang and Chongqing. High-speed trains and the expressway run to it through the mountains from Guiyang and Chongqing, and roads reach the fortress and the Maotai valley. Buses reach the mountain towns around.
