What is the history of Xiangyang?
Xiangyang has guarded the Han River for two thousand years. It stood at a great crossing. The city held the road between the north and the heart of China, and whoever ruled here commanded the way south.
In the age of the Three Kingdoms it was a prize of war. Nearby at Longzhong the strategist Zhuge Liang lived in a thatched hut, until the warlord Liu Bei came three times to beg his help, and armies fought for the walls of Xiangyang. The great walls saw one long famous siege.
When the Mongols swept into China, Xiangyang held out behind its ramparts and its broad moat for six long years, one of the hardest sieges in the history of the land. The city kept its old walls through the ages. Long after the wars, the ramparts and gates still ringed the town, among the best kept in all China, and the wide moat still guarded the stone.

Xiangyang lies on the Han River in northern Hubei in central China. The city stands on both banks of the great river, walled Xiangyang to the south and Fancheng to the north, where the hills of the north fall toward the central plains. Green hills rise to the west.
