Hradčany is one of the four historic towns that make up old Prague, spread along the hill on the west bank of the Vltava. It grew up around Prague Castle, and the castle still shapes almost everything about the quarter. Bohemian kings once ruled from that hilltop.

Hradčany stays quiet once the castle gates close and the day crowds drift back downhill. Nights are still. Beds are scarce here: the quarter is mostly palaces, government ministries, and monastery walls, with only a scattering of small hotels and guesthouses along its lanes.
Sleeping up here puts you a few minutes from Prague Castle and Loreta, ahead of the tour groups. It suits travelers who want calm mornings at the castle rather than late bars. For a wider choice of rooms and restaurants, most visitors look downhill to Malá Strana or across the river to the Old Town.

What are the main landmarks in Hradčany?
Prague Castle dominates the quarter. Its courtyards, cathedral, and palace wings form one of the largest castle complexes in the world, filling the whole eastern spur of the hill. Within the walls stands St. George's Basilica, the oldest church on the hill behind its red baroque front.
Just north sits Queen Anne's Summer Palace, an arcaded Renaissance villa in the old royal gardens. West along the ridge stand two religious houses: Loreta, a baroque pilgrimage shrine, and Strahov Monastery, whose libraries hold tens of thousands of old volumes.
What is the history of Hradčany?
A castle rose here around 880. The settlement below it grew as a service town for the court, and Hradčany was chartered as a town of its own in the early 14th century, housing castle staff, clergy, and craftsmen. Fire swept the hill in 1541, and the burnt-out plots were rebuilt as the grand Renaissance and baroque palaces that still line its streets.
Rudolf II raised the town to royal rank near the close of the 16th century. In 1784 it was merged with the Old Town, the New Town, and Malá Strana into a single Prague.
Where is Hradčany?
The quarter runs along the ridge above Malá Strana, the Lesser Town that drops toward the Vltava. Prague Castle holds its eastern end, and from there the ground climbs west past Loreta to Strahov Monastery, high near the wooded slopes of Petřín. Old stairways link Hradčany down to Malá Strana.
