About Vinohrady
What are the main landmarks in Vinohrady?
Saint Ludmila's Basilica anchors the central square. This church stands well above its surroundings, and it can be picked out from many streets well beyond the immediate quarter, a fixed point over the neighbourhood roofs. Further east stands the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord.
It presides over the eastern squares of the district, well away from the tourist core. Just north, in adjacent Žižkov, the Žižkov Television Tower is visible from much of Vinohrady, and the National Museum marks the western edge toward the New Town.
What is the history of Vinohrady?
Vinohrady takes its name from the vineyards that spread over these slopes from the 14th century. For centuries the land was worked for wine rather than built upon. It became a separate unit in 1788.
It was a municipality from 1849 and a royal town from 1879, and before it joined Greater Prague in 1922 it was the fourth-largest town in the Czech lands. Since the reorganisation of 1960 Vinohrady has lain across several of Prague's administrative districts, chiefly Prague 2, Prague 3, and Prague 10, with smaller portions in Prague 1 and Prague 4.
Where is Vinohrady?
The district sits on rising ground east of the New Town of Prague. Žižkov lies along its northern edge, and the Žižkov Television Tower rises just across that boundary. Administratively, the quarter is split among Prague 2, Prague 3, and Prague 10, a split that dates from the reorganisation of 1960. Local streets climb toward Saint Ludmila's Basilica.
