Libeň grew up as a settlement outside Prague, then joined the city in 1901. For years it was a working, industrial quarter beside the river. War brought its darkest hour.
In 1942 Reinhard Heydrich was ambushed on a Libeň street, and hundreds were shot at the Kobylisy Shooting Range in the reprisals that followed.
Where is Libeň?
Libeň occupies low ground on the eastern bank of the Vltava, in the northeast of Prague. Holešovice lies to the west across the river, and Kobylisy rises on higher ground to the north. The Vltava marks its western limit.
