What are the main landmarks in Staré Brno?

Špilberk Castle tops the list. Below it the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, St Thomas's Abbey in Brno and the Old Brno Abbey Museum give the quarter its monastic core, and the Mendel Museum stands alongside them. What is the history of Staré Brno?

Originally a town in its own right, Staré Brno was annexed to Brno in 1850, and since 1990 it has belonged to the city district of Brno-střed. Monastic names run deeper. St Thomas's Abbey in Brno, the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Capuchin monastery, the Dominican monastery and the Franciscan monastery Brünn record the religious houses that shaped the quarter, while the Church of the Finding of the True Cross and the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene belong to the same account.
